Gilteritinib is a FLT3 inhibitor. It’s used to treat a tough type of leukemia called AML that keeps coming back or doesn’t respond to treatment, especially when the cancer has FLT3 mutations. It works by blocking something called FLT3 kinase.
This, in turn, slows down the growth of leukemia cells. It comes as 40 mg tablets. You’re supposed to take 120 mg of it every day, usually with a meal.
You get it in a bottle with 90 tablets inside. The active ingredient, Gilteritinib, is formulated to target the mutated FLT3 receptor in the cancer cells and is designed to be taken once daily at a fixed 120 mg dose regardless of food intake, although it is taken with food if it upsets the stomach. You should only start and keep track of this treatment under the care of a doc who knows all about blood cancers.
It’s super important to follow the doc’s orders and not stop taking it unless your doctor says so, so you don’t end up with the cancer coming back.
