Vigabatrin is this anti-seizure drug that stops an enzyme from breaking down something called GABA, which is super important because it’s a major calming neurotransmitter in your brain. So, the levels of that calming GABA go up, which in turn helps to lessen seizures, both how often they happen and how bad they get. And mostly, doctors give it to kids with real tough epilepsy problems, especially when their other medicines just aren’t cutting it, and for these seizures in really little kids that we call infantile spasms.
It comes in 2 forms: like tablets you take in a 500 milligrams dose, and a powder that you mix with water. They usually tell you to take somewhere between 1 to 3 grams spread out over the day. Each bottle’s got a hundred of those tablets, which makes it super convenient if you need to stick with your treatment over the long haul.
This stuff works good and there’s plenty of proof, but it can give you things like sleepyhead feeling, spinny legs, and maybe a little gain weight. That’s important to know, but no need to stress unless your healthcare pro says so. You’ll need to watch yourself closely for any side effects and never stop or switch up your dose unless your doc says it’s okay.
