Vigabatrin is mainly used to treat tough epilepsy cases and a type of spasm in babies. It works by making more of this stuff called GABA in the brain, and GABA is like the brain’s way of calming things down. You can get this drug as 500 mg tablets or in a powdery form in little packets.
Doctors usually suggest adults and kids take between 1 and 3 grams a day, spread out over the day. It is packaged in bottles containing 100 tablets. They might need to change the dose if it’s not working or if it’s making them feel bad.
Vigabatrin can cause some not-so-good side effects, especially with eyesight, like seeing spots, blind spots, or things looking funny. It can also cause stuff like feeling like you’re falling over, being dizzy, acting differently, or feeling all sleepy. You’ve got to keep an eye on them for any sight issues and tweak the dose if something’s up.
You shouldn’t give it to babies younger than a year without really thinking it through and talking to a doctor first.
