Daprodustat is a type of inhibitor that targets the HIF-PH domain, which is part of the hypoxia-inducible factor. This enzyme manages the process of making red blood cells by modifying certain parts of the HIF protein. This modification helps break down the protein, reducing its effect.
By doing this, it helps blood-forming cells grow and mature, which in turn boosts the production of red blood cells. It’s used to treat anemia in people with chronic kidney disease. It works by increasing the amount of hemoglobin in red blood cells.
It comes in tablets, with doses ranging from 1 mg to 8 mg. The recommended starting dose is 4 mg a day. The dosage is adjusted based on blood tests showing iron levels and hemoglobin.
It’s not for people with healthy kidneys or those with kidney cancer. The doctor decides how long to use it and how to change the dose to keep risks low. The tablets come in bottles containing 30 pills.
